Consider these tips to start a conversation with a loved one who might be impacted by substance use problems:
Identify an appropriate time and place.
Take the time to think about your approach.
Acknowledge their feelings.
Practice active listening and give them your complete attention. Avoid comparing your experience with theirs.
Offer to help.
Ask how you can support the person. Keep your word and avoid abandoning the person.
Be patient.
Don’t judge. Be supportive and encouraging. Check-in and followup if and when possible
